Hi I’m Julie Dawson from The Wedding Genie and I am thrilled to be featured on Little Miss Wedding. As my company name suggests I provide wedding planning services that can be used as and when you want them. One of the most useful services you can employ a wedding planner for, is to coordinate your wedding day. Sometimes couples are not aware that this is an option; they think we have to plan the whole day. Some of us, and I for sure specialise in “On The Day Coordination”.

If you are anything like me, planning my own wedding was like embarking on the most fabulous journey ever. Even though I was not a typical “wedding person” I became totally enthralled from beginning to end. At times it completely took over my life and I forgot why I was getting married in the first place. Sometimes my budget became a life force all of its own threatening to get bigger than the national debt! But, on the happy day I had the most fabulous time and I can really say as most brides do, it was the best day of my life!
But!! Is there a but? Yes, my only regret was not having enough help in the run up to the wedding and on the day itself. I spent the weeks before chasing round after suppliers, making sure everyone was happy and that everything was just so. Your wedding party can help but if you are like me I wanted to spend time with them and not have them running round after everyone. I had spent months planning for everyone to enjoy themselves.

In doing so, the day before the wedding I was so stressed when I should have been chilled out spending time with my closest friends and family that it really threatened to overshadow my big day. Luckily I am a person who loves lists and organising so I managed to juggle everything and still enjoy my day. Although big chunks of it were spent worrying about if the tables looked ok, had the flowers arrived, how were the cakes arranged? Its no lie when everyone tells you that your wedding day flies by, it certainly does. My food threatened to be ruined because we spent too much time taking photographs, no one really was pointing out times etc.

That’s when I thought I thought of The Wedding Genie, a company that specialised in “On The Day Coordination”. Couples could handover their plans a month before the wedding. Sheer bliss, I meet you at the venue if possible with the venue staff there. We go through everything and I take a list of all the suppliers and plans. After that you can sit back and pamper yourselves in the run up to the wedding. I contact everyone to double check arrangements and give my couples weekly updates so they can be sure everything is on track. You also have an email and phone buddy just in case you start to worry. My brides can wake up on their wedding day, take off their watches and enjoy every single minute whilst I organise everything behind the scenes. You may have a venue coordinator, but generally although they are great, their responsibility is to look after the food and wine. Mine is to completely look after you.

On the day I greet all the suppliers; create a timeline so everyone knows what to do. I even greet your guests, if you don’t mind, and bring my emergency kit. It contains everything from suntan lotion; batteries and umbrellas to battery operated fans in case it’s hot, and even spare tights etc. If anything goes wrong it’s my job to sort it out so that you don’t even know about it.
A friend of mine in the wedding industry has a brilliant saying; a Wedding Coordinator should be the guardian of your wedding day vision. This is exactly my philosophy. Its also affordable and I don’t mind travelling. In fact to help out with your budget anyone who books this service and mentions Little Miss Wedding will receive a 10% discount.
If you are not convinced about a coordinator, my best advice is to delegate!!! Get your bridesmaids to help, give them each something to do and brief them before the wedding day. Ask your best man and ushers to help re seating and photographs. Make sure you are not running around, you need to be calm and enjoy your day and luxuriate in getting ready, concentrate on enjoying every minute, its speeds by like a train. You planned it!! Please enjoy it!

I wish you all a fantastic wedding planning journey, the wedding day you truly wish for, and health wealth and happiness during your marriage.

I’m very excited that Emmie recently asked me to create an inspiration board with a winter theme for Little Miss Wedding. For this board I wanted to create a design that could be used throughout the winter season, not just at Christmas, with a warm and cosy, yet stylish and glamorous, feel.
In order to avoid the board feeling too festive I decided not to use the traditional combination of red and gold, and instead opted for a vibrant shade of fuchsia teamed with wintry pewter and teal. I feel this palette would suit almost any winter weather, looking striking against a snowy or frosty backdrop, or feeling warm and inviting if it’s wet and windy.

I imagine this wedding to take place in late afternoon, with a candlelit ceremony followed by mulled wine and hot canapés in front of a roaring open fire. To enhance the winter theme I’d have scatterings of fake snow around the reception space, and would use large, structured floral centrepieces to create an impact. I love the idea of framing doorways with bare branches entwined with white and purple flowers, with hanging votives and fairy lights adding a touch of warmth and frost-like sparkle.

During the evening I’d transform the space with coloured lighting to create a livelier, almost nightclub-like, atmosphere. I like the idea of covering the ceiling with fairy lights to create the impression of a clear, wintry sky, and envisage a funky band keeping everyone dancing until the small hours. Sky lanterns would round off the celebration, with bacon sandwiches and hot chocolate available to keep out the winter chill.

By the way Helen Carter has a special offer on at the moment for anyone looking to take advantage of her wedding planning service as she is offering a 20% discount.

Here I get to interview Alina from White Lilies Events about her company, how she got into wedding planning and to get some top tips for brides who are looking for help with planning their wedding.

What is special about White Lilies Events?
Well, to start with: my nationality. I am Romanian, and probably my personal background may allow me to see things from a different perspective sometimes. However, it is my considered opinion that an important role is played by the wedding planner’s personality. The reason for this is that wedding planning is a service. As wedding planners, especially if we have had specialised training, we should have the industry-related knowledge. However, the wedding day is a rather personal event for couples and I believe they should trust and feel comfortable with the wedding planner that they choose. All wedding planners are special and different, and White Lilies Events is no exception.

What are the reasons for a couple to use a wedding planner and can this help save costs?
One of the most common reasons for couples hiring a wedding planner is their busy schedule and lack of time to actually organise all the aspects of their wedding day. In addition to this, industry-related knowledge is important. Wedding planners are involved in the wedding industry on a daily basis and know the trends and what to pay attention to when negotiating an aspect of your wedding. Having someone to rely on also reduces the level of stress that organising a wedding may imply. And lastly, but not the least, wedding planners can give professional and objective advice.

Why is it important to pick a wedding planner (like you) that has trained and is part of UK Alliance of Wedding Planners?
Wedding planning is rather unregulated. However, as member of the <a href="http://www.ukawp.com/"target="_blank">UK Alliance of Wedding Planners, I have to abide by their code of ethics. And this gives reassurance to couples looking to hire a wedding planner. They can be sure I will do my job and not run away with their money. Also, we take part in seminars and trainings aimed at our personal and professional development. Last, but not least, I am part of a network of wedding planners that help each other, share ideas and can always step in for me in case of illness.

My blog is all about promoting unusual and unique wedding ideas and inspiration for brides. What little touches have you made at your clients weddings to help them have something a little bit different?
I am just starting as wedding planner, and until now I have mainly been doing consultations. However, an example of a different thing would be an ice sculpture for an 80th anniversary. Ice sculptures can be quite versatile because you can freeze all sorts of items inside and customise them to your theme. And the team at <a href="http://www.icefantastic.co.uk/"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Ice Fantastic was great.

What is your favourite bit about helping couples planning the wedding?
Personally, my favourite bit about helping couples plan their wedding is the significance of the whole day. The wedding day is the official start of the couples life together. They confess their love and commitment in front of both legal authorities, close friends and family. In my opinion this is what makes organising weddings different and more special than organising any other event.

Do you have any tips for couples on planning their wedding?
1.Before actually starting to look for suppliers, I would advise couples to sit down and talk about how they want their wedding to be: season, number of guests, what elements they really want included and what can be optional. Also, settle on a rough budget. This will make it easier when sourcing suppliers and will help you stay within budget.
2.Allow time to organise everything. A wedding day implies the co-ordination of a rather large number of suppliers, and sourcing all the suppliers implies a certain level of stress. Having enough time to choose suppliers and organise everything prevents the whole process from becoming too stressful aswell as allowing you to shop around and find the best deals
3.Ask for help, may that be friends or family or even a wedding planner. Friends and family will obviously be happy to be part of your wedding, whilst the advantage of using a wedding planner is the professional and non emotional advice that they provide, in addition to their experience in planning weddings.
4.Do not let the design of the invitations or the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses take over. Make time for the two of you, do things that you like and do not talk about wedding planning aspects.
