Vintage Wedding Shoot

These gorgeous photos were sent to me by photographer, Deville, and I LOVE them! A bridal themed shoot using dresses and accessories sourced from various second hand and vintage stores in and around London.

This vintage bridalwear shoot was styled and photographed by Deville – she aims to show how old dresses with a history of their own can be beautifully utilised in a modern day setting. The dresses were sourced from vintage stores in London including Beyond Retro and This Shop Rocks and ranged in price from £35 to £200.

The shoot took place in a number of locations including the maze at Crystal Palace park, West Wickham woods and an abandoned girls school in Surrey. Pretty cool I think and just goes to show that with a little bit of searching you can find a beautiful dress well within budget!

Interview with Wedding Photographer, James Ruane

I featured James’s own wedding in Buckinghamshire a little while ago on LMW – we got chatting, he told me that he too was a wedding photographer and we thought it would be a cool to do a little interview and feature some of his photos …as you know I like to feature up and coming talent here in the UK so here goes.

* How long have you been photographing weddings for and how did you get into it?
I’ve been photographing weddings professionally for nearly four years now and originally started taking pictures as a hobby. I first got into photography in 1998 after a back packing trip around Australia and fell in love with the work of Australian landscape photographer Peter Lik. It was just one of those moments in your life when the light bulb comes on think to yourself wow that’s what I’d really love to do. In my case it was take beautiful pictures and sharing them with people.

* What were you doing before?
Needing to balance my aspiration to become the next David Bailey, with the reality of earning money, I spent several years working in public relations for some of the best PR consultancies in London. I managed everything from photoshoots to events for well-known brands like Starbucks and British Airways and it was fantastic fun! My PR background means I’m equally confident in front of camera as I am behind one. I love talking to people and help them to feel at ease, which is really important for a wedding photographer. I’ve also really understand how to deliver great customer service and offer all my clients a really bespoke and personal experience a bit like you’d find in a boutique shop.

* What do you particularly like photographing about weddings?
I love taking pictures of people and what better place to do that than at a wedding. There’s such a wide range of emotions that people go through and I love recording that on film. There’s no better feeling than capturing those unique and special moments that can often go unmissed. It’s a bit like Geoff Hurst scoring a hatrick in the 1966 World Cup Final.

* What is your style?
My style isn’t overly posed or staged, quite the opposite and much more natural, creative and fun. I’m a younger photographer (34) and like to think that I have a more modern approach that’s a bit more in touch with what couples of today really want. Most people that book me tend to be looking for natural images that will capture the real essence and magic of their special days…photos that tell a story.

* How did you go about choosing a photographer for your own wedding?
It wasn’t an easy decision, as you can imagine. We knew the style we liked and we shortlisted a few photographers after a lot of research. But the most important thing to us was finding a wedding photographer whose work we loved and who we would get along with. So in the end our decision was based on who we gelled with the most so we knew come our big day, we would be much more relaxed and comfortable infront of the camera.

* What advice would you give to couples looking for a wedding photographer?
Weddings can be a minefield and the last thing you want to do is choose the wrong photographer. Wedding photography is something you shouldn’t scrimp on, as there’s no way you can do it again. If your photographer can’t also make you laugh or smile, then you really need to question will I get those relaxed smiley images that I really want. A good rule of thumb is to look for a photographer that has many sample pictures, as well as one with a lost of satisfied references. It can also help to ask friends and family if they can recommend anyone.

* What particular themes or special touches have you seen at weddings you liked?
Some of the things that stick out in my mind include singing waiters, boats, autumn leaves for confetti, Asian brides switching outfits, photobooths, guests singing with live rock bands (www.rockaoke.co.uk),pub style quizzes, gospel choirs, Thailand wish latterns and candy buffets. One wedding I did recently that sticks out in my mind was a colourful Nigerian wedding. The lady guests were in fabulous outfits with amazing headgear called a ‘Gele’ and the whole wedding party never stopped singing and dancing all night long, which made for some wonderful pictures.

* How do you charge?
I’ve designed a series of different packages named after famous photographers to cater for people’s different tastes and budgets. All my packages include a high res disc, personal web viewing gallery, pre-wedding shoot and a photobook made by Graphi Studio in Italy, one of the best wedding album manufacturers in the industry. The price of my packages tends to go up or down depending on how many hours I photograph for, which is normally between 6-10 hours. I also offer a bespoke service if people are looking for something a little bit different as well as low season discounts from October to March and special offers from time-to-time, which I advertise on my website.

* What was the best bit about your own wedding?
I think that’s an easy question marrying the girl of my dreams.
Ahh isn’t he romantic!!

Post Wedding Shoots with Neil Hanson

I stumbled across Neil Hanson, when I was searching for LoveMyDress which is a popular UK bridal blog (you must check it out she writes beautifully and always features fantastic suppliers) LoveMyDress is also the name of Neil Hanson’s post wedding shoot package – its all about arty, fun pictures after the special day – I love this one!

* What do you particularly like about photographing the post wedding shoot, Lovemydress?
A number of things I guess….
It’s great to work again with previous clients one to one and also get to know new couples as well, its a lot of fun doing the session and I get a real buzz out of creating a “wow” image. Sometimes its the location, sometimes I shoot in Infra Red to create a surrealistic look, sometimes it’s the off-camera lighting I use to give the look I want to achieve. Some of these elements are restricted often at Weddings due to the time contsraints or other factors. I like to creating unusual images or building a shoot around a particular theme, I have one coming up in early May where the Bride just loves Bluebells so I am currently researching a few sites to do a bluebells themed shoot.

* Does it tend to be brides that you have photographed at the wedding?
Normally, but it doesn’t have to be!
The whole concept is it’s just another chance to wear the dress again and get some “arty” fashion style shots in the dress again, no time constraints, very relaxed.
It doesn’t have to be that I have previously covered their Weddings, I am happy to shoot any bride as its a totally separate / different experience. It also can be done in any dress, I have previously done “Gothic” shoots and also have an enquiry at the moment for someone who wants to wear their lovely bridesmaid dress again and do a shoot.

* What are the costs for a bride that is wanting to do something like this?
There are a lot of options, at the moment I cover a lot of bases with my packages and will probably whittle these down soon.
They range from £299 – £625. Anyone interested should contact me and I can send them a pdf which includes all the info and costings

* Is all your work in Oxfordshire and surrounding area?
Mostly Oxfordshire, however I am happy to travel and cover down to Cornwall as I have family there. I also have a booking for Kent this year as well

Well I know Trebah Gardens I used to go on holiday there and its absolutely beautiful – how amazing to get to photograph a wedding there. Special Wedding Touches with Tino & Pip

I got send a whole load of gorgeous photos from Tino & Pip, who are one of my favourite UK wedding photographers. There were so many lovely piccies that I thought I would display them all – an inspiration overload because everyone loves looking at the details.

* The Vintage set for those of you going for a vintage feel

* I love all the reds in this collage – we had 3 red double decker buses at our wedding and the guests all said that was one of their favourite bits. It was so much fun drinking champagne, catching up with friends and not needing to worry about getting to the venue!

* The Purples – I recently featured a wedding where the colour theme was purple – so pretty and the bridesmaids (and flowers) were beautiful. I think purple goes really well with all the cream and white at a wedding.

* And last of all the butterflies – who doesn’t love Butterflies? This is such a lovely touch for a summer wedding.

Deep Purple Wedding – Browns Photography

Isn’t this a lovely wedding – I really like the colour scheme which is a little bit different from the pastel colours we are used to seeing. The deep purple really compliments her white dress and those tulips look so fresh.
The flowers were by Stem in Southwater near Horsham and the dress was from White Mischief in Henfield. These gorgeous photos were taken by Joanna Brown of Browns Photography
I always like to ask the photographers about the wedding (because I am nosey!) – mainly what they liked about photographing the day and any special touches.
“I particularly loved photographing the bride and groom they were totally relaxed and beaming all day and very comfortable in front of the camera. Special touches were personal things like the mother in law made the cake, their neighbour got out their classic car and drove her to the church… it seemed like everybody contributed something special”.
Don’t you just love it when all the friends and family get involved in making it a special day for the couple? That was one of the best things about my wedding, everyone pulling together to make it an amazing day that we will remember forever.

What do you think about having a purple colour theme? Don’t you think that the bride and bridesmaids look gorgeous together? I am going to be a bridesmaid in May and I need to go bridesmaid dress shopping soon – just not sure where to start (any good ideas send them my way!)

A Tino & Pip Post-Wedding Style Shoot in The Pantiles

Wow – was over the moon to get these pics of this gorgeous couple’s post-wedding shoot. Sam and Keiko (wierdly enough thats my sister’s name too!) look absolutely gorgeous. What a great idea to have a post-wedding shoot as the weather on their wedding day wasn’t up to much.

In fact I sometimes wish we had done something similar after our wedding as we were pressed for time and didn’t get as many pics as I would have liked – bit late now as having just had a baby not sure I would be able to squeeze back into my dress!

“Braving the cold in pursuit of the perfect picture is probably something you’d associate with slightly maniacal landscape photographers, but we’ve recently been blessed with hardy clients Sam and Keiko. With a high chance of rain forecast for their wedding day, the original plan involved dashing down to local beauty spot The Pantiles (in Tunbridge Wells) after the ceremony for the couples shots. Unfortunately, the weather was a little too unwelcoming, and although we managed to get some fantastic photos after the ceremony, we were all disappointed that The Pantiles shoot had to be abandoned.”

We agreed it would be great if we could organise ourselves (and the weather!) to fulfil the original plan at a later date. Luckily, just before the recent snowfall hit the South East, we had a sunny day which offered the perfect opportunity to stroll around and get some really fantastic photographs. Kudos to Sam and Keiko – we were cold despite being fully togged up, but they were determined that it wasn’t going to spoil the day! We had great fun and unsurprisingly attracted a great deal of attention from passers-by, including a number of well-wishers for the future!

It looks like Sam and Keiko had a fantastic day – glad to see that the weather held out for them. Thanks to the lovely couple and Tino & Pip,the photographers for sharing this shoot with us all. Check out TinoandPip for further details of their Post-Wedding Style Shoot package.

Save the Dates and other lovely piccies

These photos are so romantic and beautifully shot by Adrienne Gunde – it does of course help that the couple are both very good looking!. I picked out these photos as I thought its a great way to ‘Save the Date’ rather than sending traditional cards just take some pics and get some photocards made.

I also had to post a few other pics of the lovely couple – the roses and the balloons – these little touches just work so well. Fantastic photography by Adrienne Gunde check out her blog for the rest of this shoot.

Bundles of Colour

I love this shot of the bridesmaids’ bouquets at this wedding in June at Rosleague Manor in County Galway, Ireland. The seasonal bouquets are so simple but very pretty and the colours look fantastic against the background of the red bridesmaids’ dresses.

This pic was taken by Charlie Pinder, a London based photographer – a lovely mix of colours.

London Wedding Photographer – Gemma Reynolds

You may have seen Gemma Reynolds’ work in Conde Nast “Brides” Magazine earlier this year (she was the Central London Wedding Photographer in their May/June 09 directory, and has been asked back for Jan/Feb 2010). She has also recently been asked by British Vogue to be in their top 12 recommended wedding photographers for Dec 09 issue so its not only me that is her loving her very talented and creative work. “I photographed some beautiful Vintage Brides at “Preston Court” in Canterbury. It is such a stunning venue and really enabled the brides to just feel free and at ease, as it should be. Wedding photography is a lot of fun and I really enjoy having the chance to bring out the best in people. Some of the venue’s in the photographs also include The Tythe Barn in Bicester, The Dorchester London, and The Harbour Heights in Sandbanks”

“As well as photographing Weddings, I also use a beautiful studio in central London W1 and have a very strong team of make-up artists at hand. Here I offer brides the chance to have photographs taken before their wedding as a wonderful gift for their loved one, or even just for them! Some of my girls have given it to ‘him’ on the Wedding night, and others saved it right up to the honeymoon. It can be done in what ever style you wish. We can use wedding lingerie, or ‘his’ comfy shirt with your favourite stiletto’s? Whichever ever era you adore too. These can be put together to form a little black photograph album in a cute little black suitcase. I call it the book of ‘I Love You’s’ ”

“After your wedding day, brides can also come back to the studio, or we can venture to a location of your choice, and do a ‘fashion style’ shoot in your wedding dress. This is a great opportunity to really get the best out of that incredible dress. These can make wonderful additions to your final wedding album or a one off framed portrait for your home. This shoot does not have to be just for the bride, as you may prefer to have the groom present too, and even close family and bridesmaids.”
