Sao Tome and Principe – you heard it here first!

  • November 11, 2010

Leading honeymoon expert, Rachel Hambro, talks to me about why Sao Tome and Principe is her new favourite honeymoon destination. (I have to say that photo below looks absolutely amazing)
Bom Bom Island - restaurant
“….Because no-one has really caught on yet, so it’s totally original, with a perfect mix of both culture and exquisite beach.
It’s just off the coast of Gabon on the West cost of Africa. You do have to choose your dates carefully as the flights don’t leave every day.”
Sao Tome and Principe
“There are a plenty of activities from visiting the old chocolate and coffee plantations, learning how chocolate is made and watching a demonstration from one of the countries leading chocolate exporters on Sao Tome. On Principe there is great scuba diving, deep sea fishing, whale watching, exploring the jungles in the south of the island or just stay at the hotel and enjoying a romantic beach picnic… On Principe you are guaranteed to get away from the crowds with stretches of deserted beaches so you can grab some well deserved time to yourselves.”
Sao Tome and Principe
“Sao Tome and Principe is for those honeymooners looking for a bit of adventure as well as time to relax. You wont find the huge hotels with a hundred miles of buffet, but you will get a very personalised service, treated to the most delicious food, freshly caught that day, and cooked especially for you over a bbq whilst you listen to the waves lapping against the shore. Some evenings the locals will come and perform, singing traditional dances and songs for you. There’s a new eco friendly hotel in development where each guest will have their own natural rock pool in the rainforest… aahhh.
So if you want some a little different, something original where your friends haven’t been, some culture, but also stretches of deserted beach and scrumtious food just for you – Sao Tome might well fit the bill.”

I wish I had known about Original Travel when I was getting married. I ended up organising our honeymoon myself (to save money so I thought) and we ended up swapping hotels half way through! Still we had a brilliant time and there is always time for another one when we’re older!! If you’re looking for some help in organising an incredible honeymoon then check out Original Travel – they’re an award winning travel specialist who will definitely be able to help you with that something special. What do you think about this destination and are where have you planned to go on your honeymoon?

Interview with Wedding Photographer, James Ruane

  • November 4, 2010

I featured James’s own wedding in Buckinghamshire a little while ago on LMW – we got chatting, he told me that he too was a wedding photographer and we thought it would be a cool to do a little interview and feature some of his photos …as you know I like to feature up and coming talent here in the UK so here goes.
Black and White wedding photo
* How long have you been photographing weddings for and how did you get into it?
I’ve been photographing weddings professionally for nearly four years now and originally started taking pictures as a hobby. I first got into photography in 1998 after a back packing trip around Australia and fell in love with the work of Australian landscape photographer Peter Lik. It was just one of those moments in your life when the light bulb comes on think to yourself wow that’s what I’d really love to do. In my case it was take beautiful pictures and sharing them with people.
Wedding photos
* What were you doing before?
Needing to balance my aspiration to become the next David Bailey, with the reality of earning money, I spent several years working in public relations for some of the best PR consultancies in London. I managed everything from photoshoots to events for well-known brands like Starbucks and British Airways and it was fantastic fun! My PR background means I’m equally confident in front of camera as I am behind one. I love talking to people and help them to feel at ease, which is really important for a wedding photographer. I’ve also really understand how to deliver great customer service and offer all my clients a really bespoke and personal experience a bit like you’d find in a boutique shop.
Teddington Wedding
* What do you particularly like photographing about weddings?
I love taking pictures of people and what better place to do that than at a wedding. There’s such a wide range of emotions that people go through and I love recording that on film. There’s no better feeling than capturing those unique and special moments that can often go unmissed. It’s a bit like Geoff Hurst scoring a hatrick in the 1966 World Cup Final.
Wedding photography
* What is your style?
My style isn’t overly posed or staged, quite the opposite and much more natural, creative and fun. I’m a younger photographer (34) and like to think that I have a more modern approach that’s a bit more in touch with what couples of today really want. Most people that book me tend to be looking for natural images that will capture the real essence and magic of their special days…photos that tell a story.
Wedding Dress photography
* How did you go about choosing a photographer for your own wedding?
It wasn’t an easy decision, as you can imagine. We knew the style we liked and we shortlisted a few photographers after a lot of research. But the most important thing to us was finding a wedding photographer whose work we loved and who we would get along with. So in the end our decision was based on who we gelled with the most so we knew come our big day, we would be much more relaxed and comfortable infront of the camera.
Bride and Groom, Black and White photography
* What advice would you give to couples looking for a wedding photographer?
Weddings can be a minefield and the last thing you want to do is choose the wrong photographer. Wedding photography is something you shouldn’t scrimp on, as there’s no way you can do it again. If your photographer can’t also make you laugh or smile, then you really need to question will I get those relaxed smiley images that I really want. A good rule of thumb is to look for a photographer that has many sample pictures, as well as one with a lost of satisfied references. It can also help to ask friends and family if they can recommend anyone.
Couple Married
* What particular themes or special touches have you seen at weddings you liked?
Some of the things that stick out in my mind include singing waiters, boats, autumn leaves for confetti, Asian brides switching outfits, photobooths, guests singing with live rock bands (www.rockaoke.co.uk),pub style quizzes, gospel choirs, Thailand wish latterns and candy buffets. One wedding I did recently that sticks out in my mind was a colourful Nigerian wedding. The lady guests were in fabulous outfits with amazing headgear called a ‘Gele’ and the whole wedding party never stopped singing and dancing all night long, which made for some wonderful pictures.
Teddington Wedding photos
* How do you charge?
I’ve designed a series of different packages named after famous photographers to cater for people’s different tastes and budgets. All my packages include a high res disc, personal web viewing gallery, pre-wedding shoot and a photobook made by Graphi Studio in Italy, one of the best wedding album manufacturers in the industry. The price of my packages tends to go up or down depending on how many hours I photograph for, which is normally between 6-10 hours. I also offer a bespoke service if people are looking for something a little bit different as well as low season discounts from October to March and special offers from time-to-time, which I advertise on my website.
Canary Wharf Wedding
* What was the best bit about your own wedding?
I think that’s an easy question marrying the girl of my dreams.
Ahh isn’t he romantic!!Music Stand at Wedding
I think that this is a really lovely selection of James’ work. Be sure to check out James Ruane’s website for more details of his work. He is also running a competition with Wedding Ideas Magazine to win a £2000 Wedding Photography package for free so those of you getting married next year make sure that you enter.
There are lots of other real weddings on LMW if you’ve enjoyed this one and want to see some more…..

November Wedding Inspiration Board – Winter Sophistication

  • October 29, 2010

Well it’s great to be back at LMW with a new design concept. When I was thinking about the style of this November board my first thoughts were of wintry frosts, chilly foggy mornings and long dark evenings tucked up in front of a nice warm fire, and this immediately translated into this glamorous design with a cool colour palette of midnight blue and steel grey.
November Inspiration Board
This wedding is all about style, elegance and sophistication – think Louboutins, Chanel and Vera Wang! I imagine the ceremony to take place in late afternoon as the light is fading, with the reception at a contemporary city venue with stunning night time views of the urban skyline. Guests would enjoy a post-ceremony cocktail and canapé reception to the strains of a jazz pianist, whilst the bride and groom brave the chilly air for some funky evening photos.
For decor I would use striking focal pieces and blocks of colour for a strong and glamorous visual impact. Large domed arrangements of pure white flowers would be used for centrepieces, whilst navy blue charger plates and silk napkins would add colour and contrast to the crisp white table linen. In the evening I would use coloured uplighting to wash the room in a wintry blue, with guests being served signature cocktails and dancing away the small hours to the sounds of a funky live band. Oh, and I just can’t resist the idea of hanging a giant mirror ball above the dance floor for a touch of extra glam!

Thanks so much to wedding planner, Helen Carter, for this wonderful November Inspiration Board – be sure to check out the other wedding inspiration boards that Helen has done for LMW in the past. I’m loving the November one…. what do we think ladies? (and gentlemen!)

Real Wedding * Rachel & Tom, Edinburgh

  • October 21, 2010

Enjoy these gorgeous photos from Rachel and Tom’s wedding in June – at Borthwick Church and then afterwards at Rachel’s parents’ home, just outside Edinburgh. The photographers, First Light have done a superb job of capturing a very special day, so I am really happy to be able to feature them on my blog.Wedding Photos detailEdinburgh Wedding Scottish Wedding detailThe bride held a bouquet of cool waters roses, phaelenopsis orchids, stephanotis and lilly of the valley. The bridesmaids bouquets were cool waters roses and phaelenopsis orchids, whilst the flowergirls had mini bouquets of sweetpeas.Edinburgh Wedding detail Having lived in London, Rachel and Tom were keen to have a touch of London at the wedding, so they chose an old Routemaster bus for transporting the guests to and from the church.Wedding TransportDitte from First Light told me, “We absolutely loved photographing Rachel and Tom’s wedding – the family had asked us to keep the photography relaxed and unobtrusive, which suits us down to the ground! We were made to feel so welcome by this lovely family at every stage and were so impressed by their vision for the day; a modern, colourful, summer wedding with lots of quirky touches. Having the wedding in a marquee in the garden meant that they all had to work really hard to get all the details of the day just right. All their efforts were worth it though, as when the day came, everything was perfect! Planet Flowers’ table decorations and bouquets were so beautiful – strong shades of pink and purple, perfect for a summer wedding. We loved Wilde Thyme’s beautiful canapes, from the quails eggs in mini jars, to strips of beef served straight off a hot frying pan. In fact, we couldn’t fault anything on the day – from the angelic flower girls, to the fun-loving bridesmaids (who did an impromptu portrait shoot with us during the reception), the perfectly presented garden and marquee to the beautiful and very likeable bride and groom.”BridesmaidsBridesmaids Gemma from Planet Flowers talks me through the choice of table arrangements and flowers in the marquee…“The couple really wanted something that was in keeping with the surrounds of the garden but wanted a modern twist. We used all seasonal flowers in a classic manner but by adding the addition of mirrored tea lights and a mirrored base it mixed it up a little! Table center contents – hydrangea, peonies, stock, roses, phaelenopsis, orchids and denrobium orchids.”Scottish Wedding detail
Well I have to say I love these photos (a little birdie also told me great things about First Light)…. I do seem to have a thing about Scottish weddings – its must be that I always get sent wonderful submissions from Scottish photographers and I most certainly have a soft spot for Planet Flowers who always do beautiful flowers, and I LOVE flowers.
Make sure you check out photographers Ditte and Chris at First Light – you can also see more photos from this wedding on their blog Rachel and Toms wedding. What do you think.. don’t the bride and her bridesmaids look amazing??..And the flowers are just gorgeous??
